Iran can play key role in promoting security in Asia: Velayati

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati, who is on an official visit to China, reiterated on Saturday that the Islamic Republic can play a major role in establishing peace and security in Asia.

In a meeting with the secretary general of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Beijing, he said the CICA, which was first established with the aim of promoting regional security, is now pursuing "higher and broader goals" like establishing security in the entire continent.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, as an active and influential member of the organization, can play a serious and effective role in advancing its objectives," Velayati, who is also an adviser to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, added.

The member states of the CICA are to hold a summit in Beijing on May 25 and 26.

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia is an inter-governmental forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia. It is a forum based on the recognition that there is close link between peace, security and stability in Asia and in the rest of the world.

The idea of convening the CICA was first proposed by Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev on October 5, 1992, at the 47th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
