Iran strongly defends territorial, high seas: Commander

Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the Islamic Republics naval forces strongly defend both the country's territorial waters and the high seas.

Irans Navy has been constantly navigating through the high seas since seven years ago with the aim of defending Iranian and international commercial ships, Admiral Sayyari said on Monday.

He added that the Navy has dispatched 34 flotillas to the high seas over the period.

Presently, an Iranian fleet is sailing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to provide security for Iranian and international merchant vessels, the commander said.

Admiral Sayyari further noted that Iran's naval forces escorted some 2,900 Iranian ships and had 180 armed confrontations with pirates over the past seven years.

Iran provided military assistance to 25 foreign ships over the same period, he said.

The Iranian commander also pointed out that Iran "should have maritime power in the north of the Indian Ocean and in the high seas.

In recent years, Irans Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the Iranian Navy has also been conducting patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 in order to protect merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.

Irans Navy has managed to foil several attacks on Iranian or foreign tankers during its missions in international waters.
