Mogherini stresses Iran nuclear deal key to solving Syrian conflict

Berlin, Apr 14, IRNA - European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Tuesday said a nuclear agreement with Iran could also pave the way for a political solution of the four-year-old Syrian conflict.

Talking at a question-and-answer session with high school students in the north German city of Luebeck, Mogherini said she was convinced that resolving the nuclear issue would open the way for the resolution of other issues in the Middle East, notably Syria.

She reiterated Tehran's critical role in ending the Syrian civil war.

'It's very clear that a country like Syria ... needs and will need some external inputs to develop internal dynamics that can

end the conflict,' the EU's top diplomat said.

Mogherini reaffirmed the need for all sides in the Syrian conflict to seek a negotiated settlement of the crisis.

Pointing to the mounting danger of Daesh, she warned of the rapid spread of this 'cruel' terrorist group not only in

Syria and the region but also worldwide, calling it 'unprecedented'.

Mogherini is in Luebeck to attend the two-day meeting of G7 foreign ministers from the US, Germany, France, Britain,

Japan, Canada and Italy.
