Envoy says chance of reaching Iran nuclear deal by end of March over 50%

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the probability of reaching a deal in the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group of international mediators is about 50 percent.


LAUSANNE (Sputnik) The probability ofreaching a deal inthe ongoing negotiations betweenIran and the P5+1 group ofinternational mediators is around50 percent, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said.

"We cannot say the exact percentage, butwe are hopeful. Let's see," Araqchi told reporters inthe Swiss city ofLausanne onSaturday, answering a question froma Sputnik correspondent.

Assessing the chance ofsigning a nuclear deal bythe end ofMarch, Iran's envoy said it is "more than50 percent."

Araqchi added that the ministers who joined the Saturday talks onIran inLausanne are actively engaged inthe process.

"We are ina situation that the political decisions are needed tobe made bythe ministers. I'm sure their presence will be helpful," the envoy said.

Wang Qun, Director-General ofthe Arms Control Department ofChina's Foreign Ministry and the country's chief negotiator atthe Iran nuclear talks told RIA Novosti onSaturday that Russia and China were working onnew proposals toresolve the remaining differences onthe Iranian nuclear program. According toWang Qun, the ministers will discuss the proposal onSunday.Tehran and the P5+1 group, which includes Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, have been holding talks aimed atreaching an agreement that will ensure the peaceful nature ofIran's nuclear activities sinceNovember, 2013.

The sides must reach a final agreement onthe issue beforethe start ofJuly, 2015. The political framework forthe deal should be agreed uponby the end ofMarch.

If an agreement is reached, the sanctions that have been imposed bythe West againstIran overits nuclear activities will be lifted.

The most recent roundof negotiations betweenIran and the P5+1 started inLausanne onThursday and will last untilSunday, March 29.
