US house invites Netanyahu to address congress on radicalism and Iran
US Speaker of the House John Boehner announced Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been invited to address a joint session of Congress on the grave threats of radical Islam and the threat that Iran poses.
WASHINGTON, January 22 (Sputnik) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was invited toaddress Congress next month todiscuss radical Islam and Iran, US Speaker ofthe House John Boehner said Wednesday, ina move the White House described asa break fromprotocol.

I have invited prime minister ofIsrael Benjamin Netanyahu toaddress a joint session ofCongress onthe grave threats ofradical Islam and the threat that Iran poses not only tothe Middle East, butfrankly toworld, Boehner, a Republican, announced ata press briefing Wednesday, withoutpreviously notifying the White House or State Department.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest onAir Force One en route toBoise, Idaho, called the invitation interesting, suggesting it was a break fromstandard protocol.

The typical protocol would suggest that the leader ofa country would contact the leader ofanother country when hes traveling there. Thats certainly how President Obamas trips are planned when he travels overseas. This particular event seems tobe a departure fromthat protocol, Earnest said.

Earnest didnt say whether Obama would meet withNetanyahu. We havent heard fromthe Israelis directly aboutthe trip, Earnest said. Israel hasnt officially confirmed the visit.

Netanyahus address toCongress would come ahead ofIsraeli elections, scheduled forMarch 17.

Congress is pushing fortougher sanctions onIran, which the Obama administration has said would undermine negotiations withIran ata critical juncture asinternational powers are trying toreach an agreement withIran overits nuclear program beforea July deadline. Obama has said he would veto any additional sanctions passed byCongress.

The White House onWednesday said Republicans appeared towant toadd pressure togain support foradditional sanctions.
