Putin: Iran nuclear issue close to final settlement
Vladimir Putin welcomes the flexibility of Iran's leadership regarding the nuclear program negotiations. The Russian President hopes the final agreement will be signed soon.
MOSCOW, December 18 (Sputnik) The Iranian nuclear issue is close toits final settlement; the countrys leadership is demonstrating considerable flexibility, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

We are very close tothe settlement ofthis problem [Iranian nuclear issue]. The Iranian leadership is demonstrating great flexibility, I believe. And I do not understand why the final deal has not been inked yet. I hope it will happen inthe nearfuture, Putin said ata press conference.

Putin added that a visit tothe Iranian capital Tehran is currently being discussed throughdiplomatic channels.

My trip toTehran is possible, we are currently arranging it throughdiplomatic channels I have been toTehran. We have had regular meetings butthe trip is important not forthe sake ofthe trip, Putin said ata press conference.

If we find that we need a separate meeting [with the Iranian president], then we have no limits. We have no limits regarding any sort ofexternal pressure, Putin added.The P5+1 group ofsix world powers comprising Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Germany joined diplomatic efforts back in2006 inan attempt toreach a deal withTehran authorities assuring the peaceful nature ofthe Iranian nuclear program. The parties failed toreach a conclusion bythe deadline ofNovember 24 and agreed tocontinue the discussions untilJuly 2015.

The West accuses Iran ofdeveloping nuclear weapons underthe guise ofa civilian atomic energy program. Tehran says it wants enrichment capabilities todevelop reactor fuel, and forother peaceful purposes.

The UN Security Council, the European Union, the United States and a number ofother countries have imposed several rounds ofsanctions onIran overits nuclear program.
