Russia-Iran cooperation to help overcome consequences of sanctions: Moscow

Cooperation between Moscow and Tehran will help the countries to overcome negative consequences of sanctions implemented by the Western countries against them, deputy director of Russian Foreign Ministrys Second Department on Asian countries said.


MOSCOW, November 24 (Sputnik) Moscow hopes that cooperation betweenRussia and Iran will help both countries overcome the consequences ofWesternsanctions, Deputy Director ofRussian Foreign Ministrys Second Department onAsian countries Konstantin Alekseyev said onMonday.

I think this [cooperation] really encourages us, both sides, amidillegal western sanctions implemented againstour countries. I believe that it will be easier forus toovercome them [the sanctions] thanks tosuch close cooperation betweenus, Alekseev said duringthe Russia and Iran: mutually beneficial partnership or friendship against? conference held inthe Russian capital.

Earlier inNovember, Russia and Iran signed severalagreementsonthe construction oftwo nuclear reactor units attheBushehr nuclear power plant, using Russian technology, withthe possibility ofbuilding six more inthe future. The two nations also inked a memorandum ofunderstanding forthe expansion ofcooperation inthe field ofpeaceful nuclear energy.

The West suspects Iran ofdeveloping a nuclear weapon underthe guise ofa peaceful program. Iran's earlier nuclear activities triggered economic sanctions againstIran bythe United States, the UN Security Council and the European Union.

Sanctions againstMoscowwere implemented bythe West based onRussias alleged role inthe Ukrainian crisis a claim the Kremlin has repeatedly denied. The restrictive measures targeted Russia's banking, energy and defense sectors, aswell asa number ofhigh-ranking officials.
