Quake jolts Ravar in Kerman province

Tehran, Oct 31, IRNA - A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck the Ravar town's countryside in the southwestern province of Kerman on Thursday evening.
According to the Seismological Center of the Tehran University Geophysics Institute, the tremor occurred at 20:41 local time (17:11 GMT).
It was registered in an area located at 31.47 degrees longitude and 56.76 degrees latitude. The epicenter of the tremor was registered 7 km deep in the ground.

No report has been available on possible damage or casualties caused by the earthquake.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent times hit Bam in Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
