Russia and Iran plan to reject dollar

Russia andIran plan onreplacing theU.S. dollar with their national currencies forthe settlement ofbilateral trade transactions, Iran's IRNA news agency reported.
Announcing theplans ata meeting Tuesday inTehran, Asadollah Asgaroladi, anIranian business magnate andhead ofthe Iran-Russia Joint Chamber ofCommerce, said that use ofnational currencies would spur economic collaboration between thetwo countries.

Asgaroladi was not thefirst Iranian politician tomention theplans. Following ameeting with Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak earlier this month, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said that thetwo countries had agreed toconduct banking transactions inrials andrubles, IRNA reported.

Russia has long been aproponent ofreducing thedollar's pre-eminence ininternational trade, aposition that became top priority this year after Western sanctions over thecrisis inUkraine cut off Russian state banks andenergy majors fromU.S. andEU capital markets.

Earlier this month, Russia andChina agreed tosettle more oftheir future bilateral trade using the ruble andyuan. Russia andNorth Korea inJune also agreed toswitch torubles fortrade payments.
