Iran hails establishment of Syria’s new government

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran on Monday welcomed the formation of a new government in Syria, and congratulated the Arab country’s nation and president on the development.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham expressed the hope that following the June presidential election in Syria and formation of the new government on Sunday, the country would “successfully weather an imposed crisis in light of rapport and national unity.”

She also praised the Arab nation for its strong resistance to the foreign-backed militancy that erupted in 2011.

“With people’s support and resistance as well as the solidarity between the army and the popular forces, Syria could withstand the terrorist invasion that was sponsored by certain foreign countries during more than three years of crisis in that country,” Afkham added.

On Sunday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad swore in his new government, noting that security and reconstruction of the crisis-torn country would be high on the agenda.

The new government, appointed earlier this week after Assad’s re-election in June, takes office as the death toll in the country’s conflict since March 2011 soars past 191,000.

Assad has urged the new government to "provide a new vision" and to avoid the "negatives of the previous stage," according to state news agency SANA.
