Gaza power plant wont start running till Monday

Gazans will have to stay without power till at least Monday as the only power plant in the besieged enclave is still out of fuel.
On Sunday, the deputy director of Gaza's Energy Authority, Fathi al-Sheikh Khalil, said that "We were expecting the delivery today (Sunday) of 500,000 liters of fuel, but the delivery has been delayed, and only 100,000 liters have been delivered."
Officials had said Israel would allow the resumption of diesel deliveries into the besieged strip on Sunday.

The senior Hamas energy official also said that the power plant is expected to resume operations on Monday morning. It supplies about 30 percent of the enclave's electricity needs.

On Thursday, Israel shut down the Kerem Shalom crossing into southern Gaza. The closure came after rounds of tit-for-tat attacks by the Israeli military and Palestinian resistance fighters in the blockaded territory.

The escalation began on March 11 when an Israeli airstrike killed three members of the Palestinian resistance movement Islamic Jihad in Gazas southern city of Khan Yunis. The deadly incident triggered a series of retaliatory attacks between the two sides.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

The apartheid regime of Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education.
