Damascus says it is committed to the Islamic Republic of Irans participation in the Geneva 2 conference on the situation in Syria next month."Syria is committed to Iran joining the peace conference," said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on Sunday.
"It is illogical that the United States or the so-called opposition exclude this country from the conference for political reasons," the foreign minister said.
At a press conference held after a meeting with US and Russian officials in the Swiss city of Geneva on December 20, UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said that there was no agreement on participation of Iran yet.
"It's no secret that we in the United Nations welcome the participation of Iran, Brahimi said, adding that the US opposed the idea.
On December 23, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said invitations to the peace talks would be sent by the end of the year, calling for Irans participation.
"The invitation list is near complete, I hope the question of Iran's participation is resolved soon As I have said before, Iran needs to contribute to peace in Syria along with others in the region," said the UN chief.
Tehran has made it clear that it will not accept any condition to attend the US-intermediated talks due to be held on January 22, 2014.
The talks aim at finding a political solution to the deadly crisis that has gripped Syria since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for over two years.
