Geneva deal doesnt need Majlis ratification: MP

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the agreement signed between Iran and the Sextet in Geneva does not require the Majlis ratification as it is an interim and voluntary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Under Article 77 of the Constitution, all international contracts, treaties and agreements must be ratified by Majlis, said Mohammad Dehqan who sits on the Majlis Presiding Board.

The legislator added, however, that the Geneva deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the US - plus Germany is an MoU not an international agreement, and hence, does not need the MPs thumbs up.

Dehqans remarks come as a number of Iranian lawmakers had called for the ratification of the Geneva deal in Majlis.

Iran and the Sextet sealed the interim deal in Geneva on November 24 to pave the way for the full resolution of the Wests decade-old dispute with Iran over the countrys nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Irans confidence-building bid to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the six world powers agreed to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The Geneva accord would also temporarily lift White House executive orders of July 2012 and June 2013 that imposed penalties on countries that trade petrochemicals with Iran.
