Mideast extremism can spread globally: Iran
Irans Foreign Minister has warned that unless a global campaign is launched against extremism in the Middle East, the ramifications of the phenomenon will engulf the entire world.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart Emma Bonino in Rome, Zarif pointed to the deadly twin terrorist attacks on the Iranian Embassy in Beirut on Tuesday, saying, The tragedy should be a reminder for all of us that we need to deal with this issue and unless we deal with this issue seriously it will engulf all of us.
The problem of extremism in our region which led to the tragedy today in Lebanon and other acts of terrorism ... cannot be even contained in the region and can extend outside the region. It is a common security problem for all of us, he said.
At least 23 people were killed and more than 140 injured in twin explosions near the Iranian Embassy in Beirut's southern neighborhood of Janah on Tuesday.

We already see the consequences of the extremist forces in Syria, [they are also] operating inside Iraq, as the same organizations are killing people on the streets of Baghdad and they are killing [people] on the streets of Damascus, the Iranian foreign minister pointed out.

It is a very serious problem and I believe once we see a flare-up of the tension that is boiling in Syria, there will be hardly a possibility of stopping it at the Syrian border even within the Middle East, he added.

According to Press TV sources, the first explosion took place when a bomber blew his explosives near the gate of the embassy, and the second blast happened just meters away when a car bomb went off.

The death toll is expected to rise, as many of the wounded are in critical condition.

Abdullah Azzam Brigades, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has claimed responsibility for the twin blasts.
