West has double standards on Iran N-issue: MP

An Iranian lawmaker has hit out at the West for having adopted a double-standard approach vis--vis Tehrans nuclear energy program.
The West and hegemonic powers have double standards towards the use of nuclear energy, said Chairman of the Iran-Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group Abdolreza Mesri in a meeting with member of Brazils Chamber of Deputies (the lower house) Claudio Cajado Sampaio in Tehran on Sunday.

The use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is among the inalienable rights of the Iranian nation, and it forms the basis for Irans talks over its nuclear case, said Mesri.

The US, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Irans nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence showing that Irans civilian nuclear program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production.

Mesri also praised the influential and positive role of parliamentary friendship groups in furthering relations between countries, and noted that the Iran-Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group is fully prepared to help promote parliamentary ties between Tehran and Brasilia.

Mesri further pointed to Irans scientific and technological achievements as well as Brazils developing economy, adding that there is enormous potential for the enhancement of relations between Iran and Brazil that need to be unlocked.

Cajado Sampaio, for his part, voiced the Brazilian congresss readiness to advance political, industrial, economic and technological relations with Iran.

He said the Brazilian government and congress believe that a friendly atmosphere has been created in all spheres for the promotion of ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Cajado Sampaio also noted that Brazils foreign policy is based on respect for all nations willpower, non-interference in the domestic affairs of other countries plus peaceful resolution of disputes among world countries, and that Brasilia is ready to boost its ties with Tehran on such a basis.
