Iran to host Middle East car rally championship

Iran to host Middle East car rally championship
Motorsport in Iran will be given a tremendous boost later this year when enthusiasts from around the Middle East gather in the country for the first time to compete with each other.
On Friday, the Motorcycle and Automobile Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (MAFIRI) broke the news of the rally, which is expected to attract attention from across the Middle East.

The sports event was agreed in a recent meeting in Dubai between Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who is the vice president of the Fdration Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the president of the Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates (ATCUAE), and MAFIRI acting President Hamid Reza Mehrali.

Shiraz, situated 919 kilometers (571 miles) south of Tehran, has been named as the city hosting the historic rally championship.

A committee has already been formed to make the necessary preparations for the event.

Rallying, also known as rally racing, is a form of auto racing that takes place on public or private roads with modified production or specially built road-legal cars.

The sport is distinguished by running not on a circuit, but instead in a point-to-point format in which participants and their co-drivers drive between set control points, leaving at regular intervals from one or more start points.

Rallies may be won by pure speed within stages or alternatively by driving to a predetermined ideal journey time within the stages.
