Iran, UK FMs to meet in NY

Tehran, Sept 17, IRNA Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif is to meet British Foreign Secretary William Hague on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, it was reported Tuesday.
FM Zarif and not President Hassan Rohani is to meet Hague on the sidelines of the UN annual meeting which is to begin on September 22, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham added.

She made the announcement when asked about a report on possible meeting between President Rohani and British foreign secretary.

Speaking to reporters at her weekly press conference, Afkham also commented on reports on Londons willingness to reopen its embassy in Tehran.

Following the inauguration of President Rohani, British Prime Minister David Cameron sent a letter to the Iranian President calling for promotion of Tehran-London diplomatic ties.

The letter has been responded, Afkham said, adding that the Iranian officials are examining the call and would announce their decision later.

Relations between Iran and Britain hit an all-time low in November 2011, when the two countries shut down their diplomatic missions as a result of Britains key role in the imposition of a new set of western sanctions against Iran and its repeated meddling in Irans domestic affairs.

Iran recalled all its staff and closed its embassy in London after Britain recalled its diplomatic mission in Tehran due to massive protests in front of the British embassy by thousands of Iranian students who demanded severed ties with London.
