Iran calls for special committee to pursue fate of diplomat in Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) An Iranian delegation visiting Yemen has asked for the establishment of a special committee to pursue the fate of the kidnapped Iranian diplomat in that country, the foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The foreign ministry has paid special attention to this, and is seriously pursuing the issue ... and the dispatched delegation, comprised of consular and legal affairs experts, has asked for the establishment of a special committee to pursue the matter," Marziyeh Afkham told Tasnim.

She thanked the Yemini officials for their cooperation on the matter and hoped that the two sides cooperation would bear tangible results.

The former Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi had earlier reiterated that the foreign ministry would follow every lead to learn about the fate of Nour Ahmad Nikbakht, the administrative affairs attach of Iran's embassy in Sanaa, and expressed hope that the Yemeni government would help the Iranian delegation with their mission.

Meantime, the Yemeni foreign minister said on Sunday that Yemen is making every effort to clarify the fate of the kidnapped Iranian diplomat in Sanaa.

Abu Bakr al-Qirbi told his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in a telephone conversation on Thursday that his country is seriously pursuing the fate of the kidnapped Iranian embassy staffer.

On July 21, a group of armed men kidnapped Iranian embassy staff member Nour Ahmad Nikbakht in Yemeni capital of Sana'a, and took him to an unknown location.

The Yemeni minister also expressed optimism that Nikhbakht will be freed in the near future.
