Iran warns against consequences of military action against Syria

Irans Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi has warned against the repercussions of any military action against Syria, stressing that dialogue is the best peaceful solution to the crisis in the Arab country.
At a time when the Syrian crisis is at a critical stage due to the use of chemical weapons by terrorists and [at a time when] the region needs peace and patience, talking about readiness to militarily attack Syria without the approval of the [UN] Security Council is a dangerous thing to do, Araqchi said Monday.
Any miscalculation of the situation in Syria would throw the entire region into a a dangerous and complicated stage which will engulf all regional countries, he added.
The Iranian official stressed that there was no military solution to the Syrian crisis, adding that a peaceful and lasting solution could only be achieved through dialogue.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million others displaced since the outbreak of the violence.

Araqchi said world public opinion has not forgotten the media hype created about Iraqs alleged weapons of mass destruction which resulted in a war on the country in 2003 and will therefore not allow false claims to lead to another humanitarian tragedy.

The Iranian official was reacting to the recent war rhetoric by US officials about a possible attack on Syria over claims by the militants that the government has used chemical weapons in the country.

The US Department of Defense has hinted that Washington is ready for military action if US President Barack Obama gives the go ahead.

On August 21, the head of the so-called opposition Syrian National Coalition, George Sabra, claimed that 1,300 people were killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar.

This comes as Assad has rejected as politically motivated the Western allegations about the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian army.
