Iran: US intends to implement Iraq-like scenario in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Americans are after implementing an Iraq-like scenario in Syria by accusing the Syrian government of carrying out chemical attacks on civilians.

Speaking to Tasnim on Monday, Seyed Abbas Araqchi said the US and some other western countries are trying to whip up the support of the intenational community and their own people by accusing the Syrian government of using chemical weapons against civilians.

Presently, the western countries are after implementing the same scenario (as the one applied in Iraq) in Syria when they accuse that country of using chemical weapons," Araqchi said, adding, "This is a very dangerous game, because in the critical condition of the region, a military attack will have grave consequences."

The US cited the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq as justification for its invasion though no such weapons were ever found in the country.

Neither the UN commission set up in 1999 to look for Iraq's WMDs nor the US body that replaced it after the invasion found the secret arsenal of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons or long-range missiles that the US and Britain had claimed Iraq possessed.

Also today, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described foreign interference as the root cause of the ongoing conflicts across the region.

The main reason behind the current situation in region is various meddling from outside the region, Ayatollah Khamenei stated in a meeting with visiting Omans Sultan Qaboos.

Ayatollah Khamenei further cautioned against the peril of Israel for the region, stressing, By possessing massive stockpile of very dangerous weapons of mass destruction, the corrupt Zionist regime (of Israel) is a serious threat to the region.

The Leader then emphasized the need for public security across the region, and stressed that this purpose will be fulfilled only through an outright ban on weapons of mass destruction in the region.
