PM: Syria engaged in war on global terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi said Damascus has stood up to global terrorism as it is fighting against terrorists who come from different world countries, and warned that the war on terrorism in Syria will last for years.

"Today, Syria is struggling with global terrorism because the terrorists in Syria have come to the country from around the world," Halqi told FNA on Tuesday.

Noting that the Syrian nation has realized that it should cooperate with the army to fight the terrorists in the country, he said, "Hence, we are not afraid of fighting terrorism, but this will take time and won't be materialized rapidly."

The premier reiterated his nation's resolve to continue the path towards victory in the war on terrorism, saying, "Syria has made its decision and is determined to uproot terrorism."

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad. In October 2011, calm was almost restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies sought hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots to topple President Bashar al-Assad, who is well known in the world for his anti-Israeli stances.
