Iran produces white spot disease vaccine for shrimps
TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iranian experts have managed to make vaccine for white spot disease in crustaceans for the first time in the world, using nuclear energy.
The disease shared by many crustaceans across the world has led to death of many shrimps over the recent years, costing shrimp farms in developed countries thousands dollars. It has also been common in many shrimp pools in Iran, inflicting considerable volume of loss.

Mohammad Afshar-Nasab, Head of an Iranian research team who worked on the project, said three methods of Gama ionizing radiation, electron and formalin, a chemical material, were used in producing the vaccine. The deactivated virus obtained by the three methods was tested on mature and immature shrimps.

Results of the research suggested that Gama radiation is the best method for protecting the shrimps up to 2 weeks after vaccination and preventing the disease in the creatures.

The pilot phase of the project has lasted for two years. The vaccine would be used in the three methods of injection, bathroom and feeding to check their effects.

The locally-made vaccine would be available in the market by mid 2014.
