A member of the Iran Embassy staff in Yemen has expressed surprise over the silence of Yemeni officials on the recent abduction of an Iranian diplomat in the Arab country.
The diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the ISNA News Agency on Wednesday that the Yemeni government has failed to provide the security of Iranian diplomats in the country.
“There have been no reports about the fate of the abducted Iranian diplomat in Yemen, and so far no one has claimed responsibility for [the abduction]. But, we are pursuing the case through Yemeni officials,” said the Iranian diplomat.
“We are waiting and hoping to to see Yemeni authorities, particularly Interior Minister [Abd al-Qader Qahtan], who are in charge of the security [of diplomats] to be answerable in this regard.”
The Iranian diplomat added that Yemeni officials must also justify Yemeni public opinion about how such an incident took place in the country at a time when Yemeni forces were on high alert.

On Tuesday, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian underlined the responsibility of the Yemeni government in guaranteeing the safety of Nour Ahmad Nikbakht -- the administrative staff member at the Iranian Embassy in Sana’a, who was recently abducted in the host country.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Yemeni charge d’affaires to Tehran on Sunday to convey the Islamic Republic's serious concern over the fate of the kidnapped Iranian diplomat and to reiterate the responsibility of Sana’a in guaranteeing Nikbakht’s safety.

Police sources in Yemen reportedly stated on Sunday that unknown gunmen had kidnapped Nikbakht.

The Iranian diplomat was travelling in the diplomatic quarter in southern Sana’a when armed men blocked the road, forced him to get out of his vehicle and took him to an unknown location.
