Iran and Afghanistan are set to hold a consultative committee meeting in an effort to exchange views on multi-dimensional relations between the two countries.Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Ershad Ahmadi is due to visit Tehran on Monday to take part in the Iran-Afghanistan Political Consultative Committee meeting to negotiate various aspects of the ties between the two nations.
During his stay, the Afghan official is scheduled to hold talks with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Abbas Araqchi. Ahmadi will also meet with Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi to discuss Tehran-Kabul ties.
In this regard, Araqchi, who is also the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said, Iran and Afghanistan are two close neighbors that enjoy extensive areas of bilateral cooperation
There are issues over which Tehran and Kabul need to regularly hold talks and be in touch about them. General relations between the two countries will be discussed during Mr. Ahmadis trip to Tehran, he added.
Iran, an immediate neighbor of Afghanistan, has repeatedly called for a regional solution to the Afghan crisis, saying that foreign military presence is the reason behind the growing insecurity and drug trafficking in the war-torn country.
Over the past three decades, the Islamic Republic has also hosted many refugees from neighboring countries, especially Afghanistan, though it has received little international support.
The voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from Iran has been slow in recent years due to the tenuous security situation and economic hardships in Afghanistan, which political analysts say is mainly a result of the US-led occupation of the country.
