A heavy contingent of security forces has surrounded and carried out a major search operation at a central jail in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi.
The security operation comes three days after a deadly attack on a convoy of senior judicial officials killed at least a dozen people and injured several others in the volatile city.

Local officials say a large number of laptop, mobile phones, and internet devices were recovered from prison cells during the raid by the paramilitary forces.

Intelligence and prison officials say the attack on the convoy was preplanned and carried out remotely from inside the jail.

Rangers believe the attack on Justice Baqirs convoy was carried out from inside the prison cells with the help of mobile devices, the PakistaniDawnnewspaper quoted a senior prison official as saying.

The developments come after a powerful bomb explosion struck the convoy of Maqbool Baqir, a senior judge at the High Court of Sindh Province, in Burns Road in Karachi on Wednesday. The attack occurred on the busy street in the morning rush hour.

The fatal attack left at least 12 people dead. Police officers and passers-by were among the casualties.

Baqir was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, police said. The judge has a reputation for honesty and he has presided over a number of anti-terrorism courts in the country.

Pro-Taliban militants had earlier claimed responsibility for the violent deadly bomb attack.

Spokesperson for the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Ehsanullah Ehsan, said that senior judges were targeted for "anti-Taliban decisions" in recent months.

Karachi has experienced a fresh spate of violence and targeted killings over the past few months.

Sectarian, political and ethnic violence in Karachi has killed hundreds of people in Pakistans main commercial hub so far this year.

Pakistan's top court has ordered the government law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against pro-Taliban militants in the country's largest city.
