The registration of a number of political heavyweights for presidency has prompted the principlist camp to reconsider its approach to the upcoming election.
Former foreign minister, Ali Akbar Velayati, said the Coalition of Three will endorsechief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, provided that top clerics throw their weight behind him.

The Coalition of Three brings together Velayati, former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel and Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.

Jalili, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, chairman of the Expediency Council, signed up on the final day of the registration for the June 14 vote on Saturday.

The registration for the 11th presidential election of Iran ended on Saturday with 686 individuals having signed up for the race.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets candidates for qualifications.

The Iranian Constitution stipulates that presidential candidates must be religious or political figures, be Iranian in origin, have Iranian citizenship, be resourceful, enjoy managerial skills, have no criminal record, be trustworthy and pious, and have firm belief in the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the countrys official religion.
