The official registration of hopefuls for Irans 11th presidential election has entered its 3rd day, with over 140 individuals having signed up for the race so far.
A total of 144 hopefuls signed up for the June 14 vote during the first two days of the registration period on May 7 and 8, IRNA reported.

The registration of hopefuls officially began on May 7 and will end on May 11.

Irans Constitution stipulates that presidential candidates be of Iranian origin, be religious or political figures, have managerial skills, and have firm belief in the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the countrys official religion. Accordingly, anyone who believes that he can be the right person is free to sign up for the race, but whether he is qualified or not is to be decided by the Guardian Council, Hassan-Ali Nouri, the deputy head of Irans Election Headquarters, told Press TV.

Around two dozen political figures from across the political spectrum, most of them principlists, have so far voiced their intentions to run for president.

Among the famous political figures who signed up on the first day were Hassan Rohani, the former secretary of Irans supreme national security council; Kamran Baqeri-Lankarani, a former health minister; Iranian lawmaker Mostafa Kavakebian and Mohammad Saeedi-Kia, a former minister of housing and urban development.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and hopefuls must be vetted for qualifications by the Guardian Council, the countrys top electoral supervisory body.

The next president will replace incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
